AC out right now?
Call or text us, then check these three things while you wait.
- Breakers. The air handler and the outdoor unit usually have separate breakers. Reset a tripped one once. If it trips again, leave it off.
- Thermostat. Set to cool and below room temperature. A flashing "cool on" can mean the thermostat is waiting a few minutes to protect the compressor. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.
- Filter. Replace it if it is clogged. If you see ice on the copper lines, set the system to off with the fan on so it thaws.
If anyone at home is older or unwell, get them somewhere cool first. What to do in the first hour.

How it works
- Tell us what the system is doing. Use the form or call us. A photo of the unit helps.
- A licensed local HVAC company calls you back. They ask a few questions and set a time to come out. Ask for their ROC license number and look it up before anyone comes over.
- You see the price before work starts. The technician diagnoses the problem and quotes the repair. You decide.

Why a Mesa air conditioner works harder than it used to
Sky Harbor averaged 20.8 days at 110°F or hotter a year from 1991-2020. Over 2016-2025 it averaged 36.5. Through October 24, 2026, 2026 had 39, and 131 days at 100°F or more.
The bigger change is at night. A system catches up overnight, when the outdoor unit can shed heat into cooler air. In July the average low at Sky Harbor is now 86.5°F. Nights that never drop below 90°F went from 7.4 a year to 18.8, and 2024 had 39 of them. On those nights the compressor doesn't get a break.
Mesa runs a little cooler than the airport. On the same summer dates from 2019-2025, Mesa's Falcon Field station averaged lows about 2.6°F below Sky Harbor's, and logged 7 nights a year at 90°F or warmer to Sky Harbor's 22.4. That is still a long season of long run hours, which is hard on capacitors, contactors and fan motors. Common Mesa AC failures.

Older houses, manufactured homes, electric heat
About 31% of the 244,930 homes in Mesa's 13 ZIP codes were built before 1980, and another 41% between 1980 and 1999 (Census ACS 2020-2024). In an older house, ask whether the ducts were ever resized for the current system.
About 14% of housing units in those ZIPs are mobile or manufactured homes, rising to 38% in 85208 on the east side. Those homes usually run a packaged unit or heat pump, and the county's heat report found RVs, trailers and mobile homes were 23% of 2025 indoor heat deaths while making up about 5% of the county's housing. Manufactured home AC.
Newer areas like Eastmark, Gilbert and Queen Creek go the other way: most homes there were built after 2000, so the original systems are now reaching replacement age. Repair or replace.

Questions Mesa homeowners ask
Where can I get my air conditioner repaired in Mesa, Arizona?
Send a request here or call (520) 666-4679. We pass it to one independent HVAC company that serves your ZIP and holds an Arizona Registrar of Contractors license for air conditioning work. They call you back, diagnose the system and give you a price before any work starts.
How much does AC repair cost in Mesa?
Published 2026 national figures put most AC repairs at $250 to $700, with a $375 average (Fixr), or $150 to $650 for common fixes (This Old House). A capacitor sits at the low end; a compressor runs $600 to $3,000 or more. Prices in Mesa vary by company, so get the price before work starts.
How long should an AC unit last in Arizona?
This Old House puts the typical life of a home cooling system at 12 to 15 years. An Arizona system runs more hours than most, so plan on the low end of that range, and on a replacement price once it passes 10 years and needs a big repair.
My AC is running but the house won't go below 85. Is it broken?
Maybe not. On a 115 degree afternoon the house can drift up even while the system runs nonstop. If it can't catch up overnight, when Sky Harbor's July low now averages about 87°F, or the air at the vents isn't cold, something is wrong. A dirty filter or a weak capacitor are common causes. So is low refrigerant from a leak.
Who will come to my house?
An independent HVAC company that serves your ZIP and holds an Arizona Registrar of Contractors license. Mesa Cooling Pros is a referral service; we pass along your request so you don't have to call around. You can check any contractor's license at roc.az.gov.
