The 3 minute rule for AC
After the compressor shuts off, give it a few minutes before it starts again, so the pressures inside the system can even out. Many thermostats enforce this themselves. Honeywell's RTH2300 manual says its built-in compressor protection makes the compressor wait 5 minutes before restarting.

What it is
When the compressor runs, it keeps high pressure on one side of the system and low pressure on the other. When it stops, those pressures take a few minutes to even out. Restarting against the full pressure difference makes the compressor work much harder to start, and repeated hard starts wear it and the capacitor that helps start it.
"Three minutes" is a rule of thumb, not a standard. Honeywell's RTH2300 thermostat manual says its compressor protection forces a 5 minute wait, and that the screen flashes "Cool On" or "Heat On" until the compressor starts.
What it means in practice
- Don't flip the thermostat off and on to "reset" a struggling system. You will just trigger the delay, or on an older thermostat without one, a hard start.
- After a power blip or a tripped breaker, wait a few minutes before you decide the AC is dead.
- A flashing "cool on" right after you change the setting is usually the delay, not a fault.
When it points to a problem
If the system starts, runs a few minutes, shuts off and repeats all day, that is short cycling, not the rule at work. Common causes include an oversized system, a dirty filter or frozen coil, low refrigerant, and a failing capacitor or contactor. In a Mesa summer, short cycling also means the house never really cools down. That needs a technician. AC repair.
If the outdoor unit hums but never starts, even after waiting, turn the system off. A weak capacitor is a likely cause, and running it that way can damage the compressor.
Questions Mesa homeowners ask
What is the 3 minute rule for AC?
Give the compressor a few minutes after it shuts off before it restarts, so the pressures in the system can equalize. Many thermostats build in a delay; Honeywell's RTH2300 waits 5 minutes.
Why is Cool On flashing on my thermostat?
On many Honeywell thermostats it means the compressor protection delay is running. It stops flashing when the compressor turns on.
